My students haven't had experience giving presentations in front of other students. Therefore, I have to explain them how to prepare their presentation, each student’s role, and how to present in class.
They don't even know how to find information they should bring to class. So I have to show how they can search in English using English searching engines, newspapers or magazine. Second, even though they bring a lot of ideas, they have difficulties to express their ideas in English. Therefore, I have to correct them every time they make a mistake and I have to give correct words or expressions in my speaking class.
[HOW CAN TEACHERS SUPPORT SOME OF THE MORE BASIC SKILLS REQUIRED OF STUDENTS IN A PRESENTATION-BASED OR DISCUSSION BASED CLASSROOM?]
Yes, I totally agree with that how hard we encourage our students present their performance or job in English. In this case of group project, last year I tried to lead them how to prepare presentation and make it successfully. I explained how to make presentation step by step. The most serious problem was how to facilitate all students attend their presentation in English. So I gave each of them special role such as leader, collector, organizer, ice breaker. Fortunately I found out there were few students who were reluctanct to show up thier given project or task even though they used very simple sentences followed by teacher's tip. That's a good step forward.
ReplyDeleteI think when we have a new try, we can start from the beginning. We must not expect too much from the first step.
ReplyDeleteMy sixth graders did individual presentation with the topic ‘Season’. The content of the textbook might be a model of their writing and I asked them to add more. While they’re writing, they arrange their thought. They read it many times and present it to the class. Basically presentation should include, what’s your favorite season? Why? What’s your favorite activity in that season? What season you don’t like? Why? That was very short presentation as long as about ten sentences. However, I was happy to see them try it.*^^*
